One of the first of the Flying -M- series from The mastering could be improved so during the Covid lockdown I returned to the original wave files and applied myself to repairing many of the remaining problems. There were some noticeable volume changes and those were corrected as well as removing a lot of thumps and clicks. Most of the remaining tape drop-outs were also fixed. Just tightening up what was done back in when I used a simple wave editor and had zero experience at doing this.
Seemed to me that this performance was important enough and deserved to get an update. Not many Phil Ochs recordings out there and this is a very good performance even with his rambling between songs. Missed the opening bars of the first song in both sets. Jokes about how nice it is to be back at the… Whisky. A couple breaks from tape flips were spliced together to minimize abrupt changes.
Phil along with Tim and Townes were among the precious few singing storytellers you can count on a hand or two who did not sell out to industry and entertainment when the country and world needed them most.
Had a friend in common with Phil at The Chelsea Hotel and he suffered immensely for his burning righteousness and fevered desire for change. He far too soon and right on time departed this lower plane that dies daily for lack of his like. We were, though, fortunate that his collected writings so terribly long overdue were at long last published at the end of last year. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late and his last in early Why would they do that?
Donovan was supporting his recently released self-titled solo album. Donovan sounds great here and does a fair amount of talking as he intros the songs, including a mention of Elvis Presley who had died the month before. On the 24, the sound quality is even better, sounding closer presumably due to better seats, but Mike only catches the last five songs of the set. Given the second night recording is so short, we felt it was best served to bundle both Donovan sets in a single release.
I played along, too, taking a couple of photos to memorialize the moment. We had great seats both nights, topped off with second row dead center on the floor for the It takes a village to keep the Lost And Found series rolling every week.
Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace.
